For this essay I am going to be looking and researching into more depth about how most, if not all education systems are political. I will be looking at different theories such as Freire’s ‘banking’ and how this can be prevented with a solid pedagogy and what I think of this. I will speak about the oppressed and the oppressor and their role in liberation. I will also be reviewing A.S.Neill’s philosophy of Summerhill School and my thought critically about this. I will state over this essay what he did at Summerhill to get the results that he did and how it happened. I will briefly talk about Dave Hickey – The Invisible Dragon, a part of the text that I can relate to and find the most intriguing. Firstly in terms of pedagogy, Freire was best known for his theory called ‘banking’ which was how he viewed the concept of education, what he meant by ‘banking’ was that students are viewed as empty accounts waiting to be filled with the knowledge from the teachers. Freire feels that this is unacceptable as civic education, as students are asked to memorize and repeat ideas, phrases and formulas without actually understanding the meaning behind these. I feel that this is the case in most educational aspects, as it links back to politics and the government as the teachers are pushed to get a certain amount of grades and targets out of these students, so in that case they begin to fill them with all the knowledge they know to get them to this expectation. The Role and Significance of the Cult of Virginity Essay Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s evocative novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, is remarkable in that it not only portrays the impact of one man’s death in a small town in Columbia but also makes the reader ponder over the prevailing cults in Latin America such as the cult of virginity and the cult of machismo. Marquez uses the prominence of the Cult of Virginity to reflect the hypocrisy found in a society, and does so by heightening the expectations of an ideal woman, questioning what defines a victim in society and evoking the weaknesses within this Cult of Virginity. Hypocrisy, in this context means the contrast in the treatment of women versus the treatment of men. Marquez reflects on the double standards prevailing in the Columbian society through various literary devices such as style, language and imagery. Marquez highlights the importance of the Cult of Virginity in the 1980’s Columbian society where most of the people were Catholic Christians. The Cult is an amalgamation of the beliefs of the people in the Columbian town, where they deem that honor is gained from chastity before marriage. The cult creates these obstinate parameters that women need to abide by in order to be accepted in society. Marquez adopts an ironical tone while exposing these strictures for women to show how the women are taught to be obedient and subservient in the patriarchal society. In the case of Angela Vicario, â€Å"it was imposed on her, the obligation to marry a man whom she had barely seen†. If a woman is found to be violating her stereotyped gender role, she becomes the â€Å"profanation of the symbols of purity†. Marquez has very successfully blended a historical account with fiction in order to show that men want women to be virgins not because of religion that advocates for virg inity but for the mere grounds of satiating their expansive and almost uncontrollable sexual appetite. He exposes the diabolical nature and religious hypocrisy of men who openly practice the cult of machismo and dominate the women in the name of religion. Angela Vicario breaks the Cult of Virginity by indulging in intercourse not with one but with many. Her rebellion is an indication that even in this primal society, women can assert their sexuality. Marquez ironically refers to the â€Å"symbols of purity† to evoke that women are expected to be virgins in the society because it is virginity that gives a woman her purity. These moral values are held high in regard, and are meant to be treasured in the Columbian society. The depiction of these social and cultural aspects make the reader question â€Å"is purity synonymous with virginity and vice versa?† Marquez’s diction becomes very effective when the reader sees that most of the women have names that are symbolical of purity and chastity, such as ‘Divina’, ‘Pura’, ‘Maria’, ‘Angela.’ The labeling of the names is confined to women alone, and the so-called patriarchs of the society-the men-are exempted from showing any such label or behavior that binds them to such strictures. If on one hand the reader witnesses so many furors in the name of virginity, there are prostitutes in this society who are symbolic of the break in the Cult of Virginity; their status in the society divulges further the hypocrisy of men. This is suggestive in the case of Maria Alejandrina Cervantes, â€Å"the most elegant and the most tender woman in the House of Mercies.† She is admired by the whole generation of men, old and young, and is attributed with having â€Å"an apostolic lap†-a paradox connoting a prostitute with religion. These two diametrically opposite roles assigned to women question the role of church and religion in this society. It is here that the entire concept of a society practicing Catholicism and cult of virginity looks questionable, a fact which insinuates the deterioration of religion in this society. Can the Catholic Christians hold religion and prostitution at par with each other? In the case of Angela, the fact tha t she was born with â€Å"the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck† foreshadows her woebegone future. It is not much later in the story that she plays the role of â€Å"the rejected wife† for the rest of her life. Her mother Purisima Vicario makes sure that her daughters â€Å"were raised to suffer† and devoted their lives in the â€Å"spirit of sacrifice.† The word â€Å"sacrifice† reflects the fact that a woman has to sacrifice all her desires and happiness at the altar of the male hypocrisy. The break in the Cult of Virginity evokes the weaknesses and loopholes it encompasses within. It is not Angela alone who dares to challenge the typecast gender roles by losing her treasure box, there are other girls also who â€Å"taught her old wives’ tricks to feign her lost possession†. This indicates that with modernization and global feministic concerns, the girls also altered their perception on what is morally correct. The fact that the women of this society are such experts in feigning virginity shows that virginity is not symbolical of purity in their eyes. A virgin may not be a pure woman, and it is not necessary that a woman filled with the milk of human kindness has not had sexual intimacy with a man. Marquez through this novel subtly makes an attempt to make the reader understand the misconceptions prevailing in the Latin American society. It is but natural that in a society based on injustice and immorality, the girls who have to repress their emotions too are fascinated by the ‘forbidden fruit’. The fact that the men have no idea of the internal tricks of women shows that the Cult of Virginity was only a superficial concept and lacked substance from within. Marquez very subtly insinuates that the Columbian culture is founded on whims and shadows of the past, and there is no gainsaying that such a culture will disintegrate soon-a fact that is witnessed by the narrator after 27 years of the murder. The reader also tries to comprehend the intricacies of this culture wherein women are subjugated and subordinated by their counterparts in the name of their purity and chastity. Does this culture really bind the women to a vow of chastity? On the contrary, the novel is a mirror that shows that the Columbian women are adept in old wives’ tricks, and even Angela reared under the keen eyes of her parents was not a virgin. Marquez follows a journalistic style in this novel to fill his writing with a volley of questions, repeatedly, concerning the virginity of women. Most of the men are shown to be profligates, indulging in and priding themselves of the pleasures of wine and women. The Vicario brothers butcher Santiago for deflowering their sister but nobody questions his actions when â€Å"Santiago nips in the bud all the women that ever came to the woods.† Marquez employs bird imagery to develop the character of Santiago. He is a falcon free to tame any woman in the society, and it is very ironical that nobody stops him. There exist no honor codes for the poor Mulatto girls or the prostitutes working at the brothels. What kind of a society is this where men consider it their prerogative to control the innate desires of a woman but leave the licentious men at their will? Marquez describes the deplorable conditions that exist in a society based on hypocrisy and injustice. The novel is a blatant attack on the superimposed cult of vi rginity in which men so pride themselves. And no doubt a culture that forbids the right to freedom and sexuality to its inhabitants will always swallow, literally or figuratively, the lives of Santiago, Angela and Bayardo. Mount Adams Mount Adams is one of the largest volcanoes in the Cascade Range, it is way bigger then any of the surrounding mountains. Mount Adams has been less active during the past few thousand years than its neighboring mountains of St. Helens, Rainier, and Mt. Hood, it will erupt again. In the future the eruptions will probably happen more often from vents on the summit and upper sides of Mount Adams than from vents scattered in the volcanic fields beyond. Large landslides and lahars that don't need to be related to eruptions probably will cause the most destructive, far-reaching hazard of Mount Adams. Volcanoes create a variety of geologic hazards during eruptions and when there isn't any eruptive activity. During most of its history Mount Adams has shown a limited range of eruptive styles only being lava flows, debris slides, and tephra falls. Very explosive eruptions have been rare. Compared to the large explosive eruptions at nearby Mount St. Helens during the past 20,000 years, the eruptions of Mount Adams have been very mild. Eruptions at Mount St. Helens have covered areas more than 120 miles downwind with ash deposits several centimeters or inches thick, but those at Mount Adams have blanketed only areas a few miles away with a the same thickness of ash. Even though they're low levels of power and force, eruptions at Mount Adams are still very hazardous. More importantly even during times of no eruptive activity, landslides of weakened rock that originate on the steep upper sides of Mount Adams have been a dangerous common thing and they can start lahars, which are watery flows of volcanic rocks and mud that surge downstream like rapid flowing concrete. Lahars also known as mudflows or debris flows and they can destroy and kill everything in the valley floors that they run down in to tens of miles from the volcano. The most often occurring type of eruption that has happened at Mount Adams, as well as in the other volcanic areas, produces lava flows, or streams of molten rock. These and older lava flows usualy traveled less than 12 miles from the vents, but in some events larger flows where as long as 15 to 30 miles. Typical lava flows on the lower sections of the mountain and other places in the volcanic fields spread out onto gentle slopes and funneled out into valleys. The moving flows were tens of feet to more than 100 feet thick and where made up of crusty lava blocks covering a more fluidish, liquid core. Their steep fronts moved very slowly at about only about 330 feet per hour. That's much more slowly than people typically walk. Still, the lava flows will bury, crush, and burn all structures in their paths, and hot lava boulders coming off flows make it very dangers to on lookers and the also will start forest fires. A normal eruption consists of one main single lava flow over a period of days or weeks and even of a sequence of flows erupted over weeks to a few years. Eruptions that keep happening over years to decades build a broad apron of lava flows on a side of a mountain or even build a separate small volcano several 1,000 feet 6 miles or more in diameter. There is a very large possibility of Mt. Adams erupting again very soon because it has been a long time since the last time it awoke. Trail of Tears Within United States History, there has been some horrible discrimination upon certain races of people. At the trail of tears native Americans were persecuted against heavily. Until 1828 the federal government had Cherokee rights to their land and in that same year Andrew Jackson was elected president and this all ended. On September 15, 1830, at Little Dancing Rabbit Creek, the Chiefs of tribes and representatives of the United States met to discuss a bill recently passed by the Congress. This day started with all the same good intentions of those today but ended with only a few Native Americans signing the treaty which allowing for the removal of all Indian peoples to the west of the Mississippi River. ( Brill, The Trail of tears: The Cherokee journey from home.) The Choctaw were told that the Americans in Washington cared little for the situation. They wanted the Choctaw moved on their own, or by military force. The Indians were believed to be ignorant savages, but they were industrious farmers, merchants, and businessmen of all types. Some were educated people, many were Christians. They even had an organized system of government and a codified body of law. Some of these people were not even Indians, some were strangers and orphans had been taken in over the years. These were people who did not deserve what they went through. When the Chiefs and Warriors signed the treaty, they had come to the realization that they had no option. For doing this the government officials guaranteed to the Indians the body of the treaty, safe conveyance to our new homes. (You cannot forget that in this treaty, the Choctaw traded 10.3 million acres of land east of the Mississippi for 10.3 acres in Oklahoma and Arkansas that we already owned under previous treaties.) Further, it included provisions and monetary annuities, to assist the people to make a new start. One half of the people were to depart almost immediately, the rest the next year. On March 27, 1838, congress did not accept the request for the relief of the Cherokee. Many then saw their land and property sold before their own eyes. The "conveyances" promised turn out to be a forced march. it was said that "...seven thousand soldiers swooped over the nation causing the Cherokees to suffer greatly" and also the troops were ordered "To use guns and swords if necessary to punish any Cherokee who t... ... and then were treated unfairly by the government. Jackson spiced everything up for the people in his speeches but in real life ironically forgot that if it were not for an Indian he would be dead himself. He was simply an opportunist given a chance and he took it. I’ve been known to read a writing handbook or editing manual cover to cover, but I recommend reading one chapter or section at a time and absorbing information from online resources in similarly small doses as well. Practice Work on your writing every day. Commit to a daily writing exercise, even if you have only five minutes to spare. If you write for a living, or writing constitutes a significant proportion of your daily tasks at work, still set aside time to practice other forms of composition. Style or subject matter can vary day to day, or you can decide to, for example, respond in writing to something you experienced with any of your five senses (including anything you watched or read by way of a form of media).
